This is the third of five in a series on Newmont’s contribution to the SDGs.
Our contribution to the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 3 – ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages – includes actions to assess and manage health risks and support the wellbeing of the people who work at and live near our operations.
We recognize that mining can pose health risks including those related to stress, fatigue and airborne exposures and the right to healthy and safe working conditions is one of the salient human rights issues. We operate near some communities that lack adequate healthcare infrastructure and are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, malaria and other tropical diseases. Our contribution to SDG3 starts with understanding the health risks present in both the workplace and the communities where we operate.
We provide Health and Safety governance and periodic review to ensure that our standards remain effective, are widely used, communicated, and achieve the desired outcomes. In 2017, a cross-functional Newmont team engaged with company leaders and key operational department leads to seek input, build alignment and motivate support for integrating our five priority SDGs throughout key areas of the business to drive long-term value creation.
All Newmont mine sites operate either an on-site clinic or partner with external facilities that provide emergency care and health services to workers. We also track communicable and non-communicable diseases among our workforce and include them in our Occupational Illness Frequency Rate.
Through our longstanding partnership with Project C.U.R.E., we help bring much needed medical care, equipment and training to regions near our operations. Early findings on the effectiveness of Project C.U.R.E.’s newborn resuscitation training – which we’ve helped facilitate in the communities near our operations – demonstrate its importance in preventing neonatal deaths from birth asphyxia. Other voluntary investments also help support the construction of hospitals, clinics and housing for caregivers in our host communities.
Outcomes of work done in 2017 to progress our priority SDGs include the identification of 27 SDG “sub-targets” or “performance indicators” under those five goals. While we already report against many of these performance indicators, we recognized the need to report new indicators and/or performance targets around SDGs 3, 5 and 6.
In 2018, next steps in SDG3 implementation include engaging with all Newmont regions and key functional areas to develop new outcome indicators that measure improved health and the impact of our community development activities.
