Earlier this year, Peru experienced extreme flooding across the country, with 10 times the usual amount of rain falling on the coast. Home to Newmont’s Yanacocha operation, Peru and its people were severely impacted by intense rainfall in March, with major damage to roads and important infrastructure that made access to aid difficult.
To support emergency relief efforts, Yanacocha employees and Newmont worked together to collect and distribute much needed aid and supplies to those affected by the flooding.
All the funds collected by employees and the Company were donated to the Red Cross to support those in need. Volunteers also gave their time to help rebuild and clean up after each landslide event. They pitched in to repair the Cajamarca-Ciudad de Dios road and remove excess silt from major waterways in the region with support from strategic partners. Cargo containers, generators and heavy-duty equipment from Yanacocha were used to facilitate the distribution of supplies from government air bases.
