During the month of November, Newmont Asia Pacific team members rallied around a popular men’s health movement: Movember. The Movember Foundation is a global charity committed to helping men live happier, healthier, longer lives. Since 2003, millions have joined the men’s health movement, raising AUD$685 million and funding more than 1,000 projects focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
This year, the Movember campaign had an even greater focus on men’s mental health. Gender is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of health and life expectancy. On average, across the world, men die six years earlier than women. Three quarters of suicides are by men, and the World Health Organization estimates that 510,000 men die from suicide globally each year. That’s one every minute. This is why the Movember Foundation focuses on men’s health and why Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from across the globe become a united voice for men’s health every November.
In November of this year, five teams in Newmont Asia Pacific raised over AUD$29,000 and finished third in the National Industry Mining Challenge.
The winning APAC teams for 2015 were:
|1st Place||Newmont Perth Team: AUD$21,041|
|2nd Place||Team Tanami: AUD$5,340|
|3rd Place||Team Boddington: AUD$1,678 (this includes the famous Boddington Barbershop Quartet/ BBQ Team)|
|4th Place||Team KCGM: AUD$960|
Michael Bisset from the Perth office was the top individual fundraiser in the APAC region, raising in excess of $3,400 – this has him ranked just outside the top 10 on the Australia Mining Challenge Individual Leader Board.
In 2016, Newmont’s APAC teams are aiming to make supporting men’s health a bigger focus for the region and are planning to gather colleagues from around the globe to join this great cause.The famous Boddington Barbershop Quartet, or BBQ Team.
