Newmont’s Carlin mine team won two awards at the 29th (2015) Safety Olympiad held in Elko, Nevada. The Olympiad was designed to bring together safety teams from various mines to test their preparedness through simulations of potential mining-related incidents. Our Twin Creeks team was this year’s Olympiad sponsor.
Teams from 12 mines in the states of Nevada, Wyoming and Utah were tested on their confined-space rescue, firefighting, high-angle rope rescue, first aid, triage and hazardous material handling skills. A simulated accident on the mine site involving multiple vehicles, patients and explosives in a mining blast pattern was a prominent feature of this year’s event.
Of the two competing Newmont teams this year (Carlin and Phoenix), the Carlin team placed third in the triage scenario, and was also named the third overall best performers among their competing group of six mines.
Congratulations to both Newmont teams and all the competitors for their hard work and commitment to safety!
