On September 4, 2017, KCGM will welcome Cecile Thaxter to the role of General Manager (GM). Ms. Thaxter was the first female and first financial professional selected to fill an executive operational role at Newmont as the head of operations for Phoenix/Lone Tree in Nevada, and she will become the first female GM at KCGM.
Appointments to the GM position are made by the KCGM executive committee, which consists of both Newmont and Barrick representatives. Ian Butler, who has served as KCGM’s GM for nearly three years, will remain with KCGM during Ms. Thaxter’s transition before taking long-service leave. Jarrod Riley, KCGM’s sustainability and external relations manager, thanked Mr. Butler for his service, saying:
“We would like to acknowledge Ian Butler for his outstanding service since 2007 and wish him well in his future endeavours after having a well-earned break.”
Ms. Thaxter, who holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Accounting from Columbia University in New York, brings a long list of qualifications to the position, including three years experience managing a cross-functional team of roughly 500 employees at Newmont’s Phoenix/Lone Tree Operations. While there, she helped execute the Company’s strategy while fostering the development, motivation and leadership of her team. Previously, she served as the Chief Financial Officer for Newmont’s North America Region, and also was Group Executive for Strategy and Corporate Development at the corporate headquarters in Colorado.
Ms. Thaxter credits her career success to a passion for people, tireless work ethic and openness to new ideas: “I am curious by nature and like to commit a good deal of time to listening and learning before I start directing. I never go into a new role with an established agenda. I always strive to listen, to learn, and then to lead.”
Newmont’s focus on diversity and inclusion is a value that Ms. Thaxter also shares, and she looks forward to continuing with this commitment: “It is important to talk about inclusion and diversity in a broad sense and not restrict it to gender and race, but make it more about backgrounds, experience and thinking. When we have a diverse representation, we will more likely be successful at inclusion, one of Newmont’s core values.”
In announcing the appointment, Jarrod Riley extended a warm welcome from the KCGM team, saying, “We are excited to have Cecile Thaxter transfer into the role and bring to KCGM her previous experience from both within Newmont and various finance, strategy and business roles.”
KCGM continues to focus on meeting its business objectives to deliver safe, profitable and responsible production. Ms. Thaxter looks forward to joining the team, saying, “The chance to become a part of such an iconic mine and play a role in its rich history while continuing to create value and improve lives for all of our stakeholders is truly inspiring.”
