June is National Safety Month and we have been highlighting our ongoing efforts to achieve zero harm by showcasing the people, programs and processes that promote safe behaviors and healthy habits at our operations around the globe.
Recently, employees from our North America operations brought our safety value to life by demonstrating leadership in safety both on and off the job.
Our Carlin Mine Rescue Team competed against neighboring mines to emerge as first overall at the competition, district champions in the Field and First Aid categories, and were awarded second place in the Team Technician category at the recent Central Mine Rescue contest in Kellogg, Idaho.
Three Newmont Nevada Phoenix mine employees – Perry Pullin, Mine Operator, and Kyle Sanders and Nick Love, Phoenix Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) – were recently recognized for saving the lives of car accident victims in Nevada.
Dewayne Lockaby, also a Phoenix mine employee, was driving home when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming car which had veered into his lane. The impact caused Dewayne’s truck to roll a number of times before coming to rest. Traveling behind Dewayne’s vehicle was Perry Pullin, who immediately stopped to help Dewayne and the other car’s occupant. Kyle and Nick arrived at the scene shortly after and helped Perry give medical aid until an ambulance arrived. Dewayne, who had been wearing his seatbelt, suffered no major injuries. The driver of the other vehicle suffered a broken leg and was flown to a hospital in Reno, Nevada.
Newmont’s CC&V mine has begun implementing rigorous safety improvements to ensure a safe work environment.
The CC&V mine, which became part of Newmont’s operations last year, is embracing the Company’s safety culture with great enthusiasm through programs such as SOS: “See it…Own it…Solve it.” As the name suggests, employees are encouraged to identify hazards, and report them to appropriate individuals, who in turn coordinate efforts to rectify and/or remove the potential threat.
Although National Safety Month is coming to a close, Newmont’s focus on safety continues. Learn more about our goals and safety commitments by visiting Beyond the Mine, our 2015 Social and Environmental Performance Report.
Thank you to the countless employees and contractors who live Newmont’s core value of safety.
