Over the last six months, a number of infrastructure investments were carried out on the road between Moengo and Langa Tabiki near Newmont’s Merian Gold Project in Suriname.
The project included a new bridge constructed over the Patamaka Creek, along with two new culverts. Surinamese local companies, Firm Engineering and Haukes Construction, executed the project funded by Newmont.
At the end of May, the completed projects were officially handed over to the Minister of Public Works, H.E. Siegfried Wolf, in a ceremony with government officials, construction personnel and representatives from the local Pamaaka community.
All those who spoke at the ceremony, including a representative from the traditional authority, said the new bridge and culverts improved Surinamese public infrastructure. The improved road will not only reduce safety hazards, but further open the south-eastern part of Suriname facilitating regional economic development.
