Last month, Newmont received the 2015 Excellence in Hard Rock Reclamation Award from the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for our closure and reclamation work at the Black Cloud Mine in Leadville, Colorado.

The award ceremony, held at the Colorado Mining Association’s 118th National Western Mining Conference & Exhibit on March 24, brought over 100 people together to celebrate the very best achievements and practices by mining companies in Colorado.

Black Cloud reclamation has been ongoing for approximately six years and consists of the demolition and dismantling of the Black Cloud shaft and mill location, administrative facilities and the tailings impoundment.

A big Newmont “Thank You” to Bill Lyle, who initiated this project, and Larry Fiske (featured in the photo above), who completed the project, and their entire team for their leadership and commitment to the safe and successful reclamation of Black Cloud Mine. This accomplishment would not be possible without the diligence of our reclamation team.

For more information on the history of the Black Cloud Mine and on the reclamation process, read this article from the Leadville Herald.
