ICYMI: Recent Updates from Newmont in Australia

Last year, Newmont’s Asia Pacific team lowered injury rates by 47 percent; reduced gold all-in sustaining costs by 16 percent; assumed management of KCGM; and began construction of an expansion at Tanami that aims to improve production, costs and mine life.

We checked in with our colleagues in Australia to learn more about their accomplishments in safety, community investment and environmental stewardship.

KCGM SAFETY TRAINING

The KCGM Emergency Response Team (ERT) recently staged a ropes training at the Super Pit Lookout. The training marked the final day of an intensive three-day rope-rescue training course where the team practiced rescuing injured personnel from areas that are difficult to access. KCGM’s 38 person ERT trains constantly to keep in top form and also take part in annual Surface and Underground Mines Rescue competitions. KCGM has a Mutual Aid Agreement with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and our ERTs are always on call to respond to an emergency on site or in the community.

LOCAL COMMUNITY IN TANAMI

Lajamanu School students in the Northern Territory of Australia have been participating in trade training at the school workshop. In 2015, Newmont Tanami Operations donated A$26,000 to purchase new equipment which has assisted students in developing many skills, along with guidance and mentoring to help build confidence and competence in safely operating machinery. The equipment that has been donated by Newmont is also being used for the greater benefit of the community.

EMPLOYEES HELP WITH ‘CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA’

Putting into practice Newmont’s Environmental stewardship philosophy, 30 volunteers from Newmont Boddington recently collected nearly 35 bags of trash, as part of the Clean Up Australia Business Day. Since the national event started in 1990, Australians have donated more than 31.5 million hours toward removing the equivalent of 331 and a half thousand loads of trash from nearly 166 thousand registered sites across the country.
