On Monday, February 8th the team at Newmont’s Tanami mine in Australia’s Northern Territory poured the operation’s 8,000,000 ounce of gold from the deposits at The Granites, Dead Bullock Soak and Windy Hill. This culminated the success of the operation that dates back to 1896. Newmont has fully owned the Tanami operation since 2003.
The mine and plant are located on Aboriginal freehold land that is owned by the Warlpiri people and managed on their behalf by the Central Desert Aboriginal Lands Trust. The Tanami operation employs approximately 750 personnel of which 12% are indigenous.
Last year, Newmont announced that we are expanding production at Tanami. With this news, Newmont’s President and CEO, Gary Goldberg, praised the team saying, “Tanami is a Newmont success story. Since 2012, the team has more than doubled gold production while cutting costs by about two-thirds and significantly improving resource confidence. The expansion project continues this trajectory, offering robust returns of more than 35 percent at current gold prices.”
Congratulations to the team at Tanami on this achievement. To learn more about our Tanami operation, visit our website.
