As part of our commitment to create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining, Newmont Ghana conducts an intensive Apprenticeship Program throughout the year to build the skills of residents in nearby communities so they can embark on good careers working at one of our mines in Ghana or elsewhere.

Each of the 91 apprentices who have gone through the program since its inception has a unique story to tell about the journey that brought them to graduation day. Many have had to overcome profound personal hardships and other obstacles to participate. As such, graduation from the Apprenticeship Program is a very rewarding personal accomplishment and we celebrate the success of all our graduates.

This year, 15 local residents from our Ahafo mine’s 10 host communities graduated from the program, following a four-year training in mechanical and electrical disciplines, and have been awarded certificates from London City and Guilds.

Most of the students who enroll as apprentices in the four-year program have limited knowledge in the mechanical and electrical fields. After completing the program, their new skills make them highly competitive in the job market, with some being hired as part of the Ahafo mine’s workforce.

The 15 graduates were made up of 14 males and 1 female. Asked how she felt about her experience, a female apprentice said, “Newmont creates an all-inclusive environment for its employees. It has been great studying and working with my colleagues and trainers.”

At the end of a colorful graduation ceremony, Dickson Amponsah from Afirisipakrom was awarded the Best Apprentice of the Year prize. Other graduates and continuing students who excelled received various awards, which were sponsored by Newmont’s business partners: Rickman Company Limited and VIVO Ghana.

The Apprenticeship Program was established by the Ahafo mine in 2005 to help provide employable skills in mine operations and process maintenance for youth within the 10 host communities. While the program does not guarantee automatic employment with Newmont, approximately 134 trainees have been enrolled in the program and several graduates have successfully transitioned into senior staff and lead roles with the company.
